Price Rigidity: Microeconomic Evidence and Macroeconomic Implications
نویسندگان
چکیده
We review recent evidence on price rigidity from themacroeconomics literature and discuss how this evidence is used to inform macroeconomic modeling. Sluggish price adjustment is a leading explanation for the large effects of demand shocks on output and, in particular, the effects of monetary policy on output. A recent influx of data on individual prices has greatly deepenedmacroeconomists’ understanding of individual price dynamics. However, the analysis of these new data raises a host of new empirical issues that have not traditionally been confronted by parsimonious macroeconomic models of price setting. Simple statistics such as the frequency of price change may be misleading guides to the flexibility of the aggregate price level in a setting in which temporary sales, product churning, cross-sectional heterogeneity, and large idiosyncratic price movements play an important role. We discuss empirical evidence on these and other important features of micro price adjustment and ask how they affect the sluggishness of aggregate price adjustment and the economy’s response to demand shocks. 133 A nn u. متن کاملDiscussion of “ Has Globalization Changed the Phillips Curve ? ” ∗
This paper by Eugenio Gaiotti is a refutation paper: it tests and rejects the idea popularized by Borio and Filardo (2007) that globalization explains the flattening of the Phillips curve. While several papers have already been devoted to assessing the Borio and Filardo theory, the distinctive feature of the present article is that it uses microeconomic data. Microeconomic data can be helpful i...

The standard derivation of the accelerationist Phillips curve relates expected real wage innation to the unemployment rate and invokes a constant price markup and adaptive expectations to generate the accelerationist price innation formula. Blanchhower and Oswald (1994) argue that microeconomic evidence of a low autoregression coeecient in real wage regressions invalidates the macroeconomic Phi...

متن کاملQuitting and Labor Turnover: Microeconomic Evidence and Macroeconomic Consequences*
This paper presents an integrated approach to wage and employment determination combining microeconomic evidence with macroeconomic theory. More specifically, we first develop an efficiency wage model with labor turnover and show that the worker’s decision problem gives rise to a quit-rate function. We then use microeconomic data to estimate this quit-rate function and to test the specification...
